Moving Fireplace Screen
Palm Desert California – Fireplace screen to conceal television
The architect was inspired by African primitive art when he designed this project to conceal a widescreen television. This screen is in four tiers, each with a smaller radius than the one above. With the push of a button, the bottom two tiers rise behind the top two.
There were two major challenges:
Space: The space allowed for artwork and mechanicals was very limited. There was no fudge-room with the stone, small clearance with the television, and a tiny closet to contain the hoist. We had to create a wall-sized structure that appears irregular, but is engineered, built, and installed to close tolerances.
Noise: this is a high-end home, and things had to be quiet. In addition to using a special motor, mounting blocks, and insulation, we used precisely machined tracks & bearings, and ensured that the art panels—though suspended in space with copper wire—would not rattle when in motion.
